Carbon footprint
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are released into the atmosphere by a single entity such as an organization or an individual. See the carbon footpint definition in the EPA Glossary of climate change terms.
The EPA provides detailed information about GHGs (C02, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases) and the type of human activities that generate them.

CO2 emissions
Estimates of C02 emissions for each fuel type can be found on the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) website.
The EIA explores pertinent questions on their FAQ page. Do you know how much CO2 is produced by combusting a gallon of gasoline vs. a gallon of diesel? Explore this.
